problem, lots of big problems for mitt romney right now, but this 47% thing. if you're barack obama, as he has been doing these attack ads the last few days, he will hammer mitt romney over the head throughout this debate about 47%. if he doesn't, he's mad. because it's an incredibly powerful hammer to use, because whichever way you try and spin that, it was a disaster. he called half of the country a bunch of scrounging victims. what does mitt romney do if barack obama does that? >> mitt romney has said a couple things since, piers. the first thing he said was that was me, not my campaign. he actually took responsibility which i appreciate when a grown man says i'm sorry, i made a mistake. number two, number two, his campaign is all about 100% of america and here's what he meant. he said it was inelegantly stated but i agree, not just the president will take him to task on that but i think the debate questioners will ask him. but romney should look at that as an opportunity not to be defensive again but to explain precisely what he meant. the other thing that he really should do here is i

romney can give all of these voters an excuse to vote for him, right? >> yeah, we talked about this yesterday on the show. if he can go in -- that's why i worry about all this talk about zingers, just stylistically. don't be someone you're not. don't come in with canned jokes. be who you are, which is the line he delivered, i thought, well in his convention speech where he said, i can't heal the earth. i'm not going to part the seas, whatever he said. i just want to help you and your family. i'm not fancy, i'm not exciting. i want this job because i can do a better job healing the economy, not the earth, healing the economy than he has done for the last 3 1/2 years. if he can do that, be confident, don't try to be slick or funny, it's not who you are, just be mitt romney, he'll have a good night. >> i think he'll have a good night. i'll tell you this also, mark mckinnon. we're going to hear about the 47% from barack obama tonight. he'll bring that up. i also think mitt romney will bring this up in the debate. something that was spoken yesterday in charlotte, north carolina, by

obama has right now is practice. mitt romney's had a lot of debates. he went through a long primary practice where he got beat up a lot and got to beat up other people. barack obama had no primary process and has not been in a debate since his debates in the last election. so i think he's got -- he's not in fighting shape is my guess and all these practices he's doing, are to get him in the fighting shape. hopefully they have enough time to do it and hopefully he has a sparring opponent in john kerry who is not pulling any punches, not being as respectful to him as his staff might be and showing him that mitt romney is going to get on the stage knowing this is probably his last chance and he's going to be very aggressive in taking on obama. >> steve, thank you very much for your time. >> good to be here. >> steve, what do you think about this idea that debates don't usually change the race entirely all by themselves, but they confirm the narrative that has already been going on in the country? >> well, they can confirm the narrative but we keep coming back to this 2004 example and i

in pennsylvania this afternoon, mitt romney made this bold promise. >> you're right, they're wrong, and we'll win pennsylvania and take the white house. >> reporter: but for that to happen with polls showing him trailing the president, analysts say romney must change the trajectory of the race. in a discussion, he acknowledged this is an important opportunity. >> and i think it will give people a chance to understand where we actually stand, as opposed to where our opposition thinks we stand. and then they can make a more informed choice. >> reporter: while both candidates are practicing in private, president obama held a closed-door session this afternoon. and publicly their campaigns are showering the opponents with praise. a message from one expert outlines romney's skills as a prepared, aggressive, debater. the romney campaign is touting president obama's natural gifts and the extensive seasoning under the bright lights of the bright stage. today, in a mock debate, senator john kerry dismissed the idea that the republican nominee is an inexperienced debater, pointing to more than 20 debates.

. it could be mitt romney comes across as likeable. there's a lot of things that could go right for governor romney. there will be two more debates, not election eve. having said this the fact that i don't think the debates will change a lot, the race is close. if there's a small change, even a couple points because of the debates that could be decisive. >> heather: there is the matter of real world matters as well in terms what is going on in the real world, surrounding these debates and the times they happen, right? >> exactly right. four years ago the reason nothing changed from this point on to the rest of the election, the debates didn't matter because we already had the wall street meltdown and candidates had reacted, real world events solidified 's solid lead. we haven't had an event like that but there's things percolating in the mideast that could shake-up the race, a couple more employment reports. if employment numbers and other economic indicators muddle along, then they won't change things that much. if there is a big shift in perceptions of the economy, that will have a bigger
